Home Energy and Resource Monitoring - Automatically


Until recently, energy monitoring and the various technologies for the control of power consumption was a pursuit generally reserved for large commercial and institutional projects where energy efficiency in design could literally save millions.  Now, in today's new leaner and greener residential market, many of these systems are emerging, scaled down and simplified for home use.

Whether you're building from the ground up or simply remodeling, it is certainly worth while to become acquainted with the numerous options available for home energy efficiency.

Energy efficiency, or more precisely, resource efficiency, is a rapidly growing area of interest for residential builders and home owners.  Every month, most all of us have experienced the woes of ever-increasing water and utility bills that seemingly skyrocket with consumption beyond "Baseline" use. In more extreme cases, we may even experience scenarios where those resources are just not available.  

The good news of all this, resides in the multitude of products and methods currently available for home energy management and conservation.  In order to better understand home energy management, we need to consider three fundamental ideas: DESIGNING, MONITORING, and MANAGING.

DESIGNING: Designing for energy efficiency involves the informed selection of the products and systems that will be used throughout your home.  Good examples of this include lighting products, [lamps and fixtures] energy efficient appliances, windows, doors, insulation, heating and AC, and exterior irrigation.  Depending on your ability to integrate these items, your home will inherently function at a given level of efficiency.

MONITORING: Once your home has been designed to integrate X amount of energy-friendly technology, a host of home-monitoring systems are available to give you on-going feedback on how your house is performing with regards to energy [resource] consumption.  Most systems show over-all usage, peak usage times and comparisons of previous consumption patterns.  With this information readily available, it is easier to understand and revise consumption patterns to continuously fine-tune your home's energy performance.

MANAGING: Numerous systems for managing [i.e.controlling] home energy use, run the gamut from very, very simple [motion sensor switches strategically placed] to extremely complex automation systems that can monitor and manage a home's functions on a moment to moment basis.  The key to any of these systems is to minimize the use of energy where and when it is not serving a need.  Your selection of home management system[s] will depend on personal/household needs, level of sophistication, and, of course, system cost.
